Erin Merritt

PRODUCER, Director, Dramaturg/adaptor, ACTOR, Teacher

I am an actor, director, producer, dramaturg/script adaptor, teacher and arts marketing consultant available to travel.

I studied, taught, and performed with California Shakespeare Theater, San Francisco Shakespeare Festival, Carmel Shakespeare Festival, and Massachusetts’ Shakespeare & Company before I founded the award-winning all-female Shakespeare company Woman’s Will in 1998. In twelve seasons with Woman’s Will, I directed 12 full productions, acted in 6, and choreographed fights for 6, but more importantly, my company and I radically redefined how Bay Area theater companies employed women on stage.

Playwrights consider me a playwrights’ director, and actors consider me an actors’ director. I work in whatever style best illuminates the action of the play: I love unpacking plays with complex language as well as tying that language to vital, visceral action. I am particularly excited to be working with new plays (and men) again.

In addition to my directing and acting work, I have adapted plays by Brecht and Shakespeare for a wide range of companies, and have served as script consultant or dramaturg to several others. A masterful guerrilla marketer, I have also worked with companies in the Bay Area and Los Angeles to help them reach new audiences without breaking their budgets.

In all my various job titles, I specialize in making theater artists shine, not only in text-driven work like Shakespeare, but also by helping them effectively access Brechtian theater and Russian theater and by ensuring wordy texts stay connected to their physical roots. I have taught everyone from seniors to six year olds, and I love to bring theater to life.
